finding the key
practical ideas for supporting pupils with special needs

The day will cover the type of need often encountered, Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia), Dyspraxia, Autistic Spectrum Condition, ADHD, PDD, Downs, Social Communication Difficulties, Speech & Language and Behaviour. We will cover the main features of these difficulties with some handouts, which could serve as a checklist, to identify the type of difficulty and therefore the type of ‘learner’ and the techniques/aids that could help the pupil to engage more successfully in the learning.

The timetable for the day will include sessions on:

  • ·         Recognising the type of need.

  • ·         Being aware of the pupil’s preferred learning style

  • ·         Practical games/aids/prompts that you can make to help the individual pupil

  • ·         Ideas for a ‘Speech & Language group’.

  • ·         Ways to prompt and question

  • ·         Visual timetables

  • ·         Easy & Accountable recording

As a result of the day you will take home ideas specific for the type of need you are working with. A check list to help identify the type of difficulties relevant to particular pupils. At least one game/aid to use immediately with a pupil you have identified. Ideas of how to question, simplify instructions, adapt information and maintain self esteem so that those you work with will be able to engage more successfully with the learning.

Your tutor will be Jan Traves. Jan retired at Easter 2010 having been involved in SEN for the 16 years, the last 12 years as joint SENCo/Inclusion of one of the largest middle schools in the S.East. There were 780+ on roll and approximately and 156 on the SEN register. The range of need of those on the register was extremely wide and varied. Jan shared the management a team of 26 TAs. Both Ofsted reports during her time as joint SENCo judged Special Needs to be outstanding.  For the last 3 of those 12 years Jan was also SENCo at a very small village school. She worked with county advisors to improve the SEN provision within those schools. She have set up programmes for various individual pupils monitoring the effectiveness and adjusting the programme accordingly.  Jan has an MA(Ed), which included the areas of Leading and Managing, Children at Risk, Dyslexia & Autism. She also have the OCR ‘Certificate for Teachers of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties’.
